I am Peter M. Lopez, a criminal defense lawyer and family law attorney in Sweetwater, Texas.

I have represented literally hundreds of people charged with crimes or who are going through a divorce or custody battle. I have limited my law practice to criminal defense and family law so I can help people in their time of greatest need.

I have represented citizens charged with misdemeanor crimes such as driving while intoxicated (DWI/DUI), family violence, and theft. I have also represented those charged with the most serious felony offenses, including drug possession, manufacturing, and delivery, robbery, sexual assault, and murder. I have tried numerous criminal cases to a jury with exceptional results. I consider it an honor and privilege when a citizen accused of a crime puts their life in my hands.

I have also represented numerous people who have entrused me with the future of their family. I have represented men, women and children at every stage of family and matrimonial litigation including divorce, child custody cases, child support cases, paternity suits, adoptions, parental rights termination cases, and litigation involving state agencies such as Child Protective Services and the Office of the Attorney General.

If you have been charged with a crime, or, if you need a lawyer who will represent you in any area of family law, please call me for a free consultation. You may contact me online or call my office.

She has taken a leave from her education career as she and her husband have begun raising their family, and this break has afforded her the time and opportunity to take an increased role in coordinating the children’s ministry of Emmanuel Fellowship.

02 April 2009

High Sky Children's Ranch and West Texas Children's Advocacy Center are agencies committed to helping families of the Nolan, Scurry, Fisher and Mitchell Counties communities to stop child abuse. Four years ago both agencies decided that more needed to be done to assure that the communities become aware that child abuse was a problem. It was found that the general public and some community leaders were unaware that child abuse existed and needed to be reported. HSCR and WTCAC decided to work together to help stop child abuse and involve local community leaders and other agencies. This commitment led to the development of the West Texas Family FunFair.

Local Man Sentenced to Three Years in Retaliation Case

27 March 2009

What degree of punishment should one receive when he or she threatens the life of a peace officer? That was, in essence, the question posed by Juan Rodriguez Bernal's defense attorney, Peter Lopez during his opening statement to the jury serving the case.

Bernal was found guilty Thursday of retaliation — a third degree felony — by a 12 man jury. Judge Glen Harrison presided over the case which was tried by Trey Keith, assistant district attorney for the 32nd Judicial District.

In Bernal's case, the jury didn't decide the punishment. A last-minute plea agreement was entered to the court, and Bernal agreed to accept a term of three years of confinement in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice penitentiary.
