It's official — Peter M. Lopez has filed for the office of Nolan County Judge. He announced his intent to run this past November. He will be running as a Republican.

Lopez is a local attorney who has practiced law in Sweetwater and the surrounding area for almost 10 years.
He has chosen to run as a Republican, despite the fact that past elections have favored the Democrats. "It didn't seem right for me to run as the candidate for change, only to begin by doing things the way they have always been done," Lopez said.

He understands that the values promoted by the Republican party are more aligned with the people who live in rural West Texas. He believes that should be reflected in the local leadership.

"I think it's a good thing when voters have choices," Lopez said. "Voters rarely have a real choice anymore in elections. In this election, the voters of Nolan County have real and distinct choices in the candidates for county judge."

Lopez says that his legal experience is going to give him the ability, if elected, to hit the ground running and won't require on-the-job training to decide legal questions.

"I am the only attorney in this race, and the county judge is first and foremost a judge, who hears and rules on complex legal matters," Lopez said.

"I want the voters to know that I am committed to this campaign and to being the next County Judge. I can say with some confidence that I am the only choice among the candidates who didn't struggle with the decision of whether to run or retire," Lopez said. "I think that is important because I will not serve the citizens of Nolan County with one foot out the door."
